Rashi
Rashi — Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki (1040–1105)
Rashi is the foremost commentator on the Chumash and the Talmud. Born in Troyes, France, he studied in the yeshivos of Mainz and Worms before returning home, where he supported himself as a vintner while teaching Torah. His commentary on the Torah was among the first Hebrew books ever printed, and to this day his peirush appears on the page of nearly every Chumash and Gemara. Written with unmatched clarity and brevity, Rashi opened the gates of Torah study to talmidim of every level. His grandchildren and students became the Baalei HaTosafos, shaping Torah learning for the generations that followed.
