A tribute to the extraordinary Torah world that flourished across Italy and the wider Italian Jewish tradition.

Gedolei Torah of Italia brings together six renowned rabbanim from generations spanning the 17th through the early 19th centuries. Seated together around a table of open seforim, the composition imagines these towering figures sharing a single moment of Torah, each representing a different chapter in the intellectual and spiritual legacy of Italian Jewry.

The rich, old-world setting, warm tones, and painterly texture evoke the libraries and batei midrash of an earlier Europe. The open seforim recall the works through which their Torah continues to be learned centuries later.

1. Rav Shimshon Morpurgo (1681–1740)
   Av Beis Din of Ancona and author of Shu”t Shemesh Tzedakah.

2. Rav Shabbesai Marini (1690–1748)
   A distinguished Italian Rav and one of the Rebbim of the Ramchal, Rav Moshe Chaim Luzzatto.

3. Rav Moshe Chafetz (1663–1711)
   Author of Meleches Machsheves.

4. Rav Yosef Shlomo Delmedigo (1591–1655)
   Known as the Yashar of Candia, יש״ר מקנדיא, and author of Sefer Elim.

5. Rav Yishmael HaKohen (1723–1811)
   Known in Italian as Laudido Sacerdoti. Av Beis Din of Modena and author of Shu”t Zera Emes.

6. Rav Dovid Nieto (1654–1728)
   Av Beis Din of London and author of Mateh Dan, Kuzari HaSheni.

More than a historical portrait, Gedolei Torah of Italia celebrates a world of Torah scholarship, mesorah, and creativity whose influence traveled far beyond Italy.
